Improving planning with a versatile calendar interface

Background

The legacy mobile app supported short-term planning well, but users struggled with scheduling and visualizing longer-term tasks. The restrictive 7-day calendar view left users feeling limited and frustrated, making it difficult to manage their schedules effectively.

To address these challenges, the app required a more flexible solution that maintained the simplicity of the weekly view while offering a broader perspective for longer-term planning.

Process

Research & planning

To understand user needs and pain points, I conducted interviews with various user personas and gathered feedback from stakeholders. This research highlighted the demand for a calendar interface that supported long-term planning without overwhelming users. Together with stakeholders, I outlined the requirements and prioritized features for the new calendar view.

Sketching & wireframing

I created wireframes to explore different layouts for the calendar interface, focusing on how a 28-day view could integrate seamlessly with the existing 7-day view. Sketches helped visualize key interactions, such as switching between views, ensuring both planning needs were met.

Mockups & prototyping

Using high-fidelity mockups, I illustrated the proposed enhancements, ensuring the new design adhered to the app’s existing visual style. I built interactive prototypes to test these updates, allowing users to experience the improved interface and provide feedback on usability.

Testing & optimization

Through user testing, I evaluated the effectiveness of the new calendar views. Feedback revealed key areas for improvement, such as ensuring clear navigation between views. Iterative refinements were made based on this feedback to ensure the design addressed user frustrations and enhanced planning capabilities.
